Do You(th) – Doughnut Economics

The Doughnut Economics Handbook was developed within the EU co-funded DoYou(th) project as an innovative non-formal education resource to strengthen the capacity of youth workers and empower young people to engage with today’s social and environmental challenges. Created by a transnational partnership of organizations across the Western Balkans and Europe, the handbook builds on Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics theory and adapts it into practical, ready-to-use training materials for youth contexts.

The handbook introduces young people to the idea of creating a “safe and just space for humanity” — balancing social foundations with planetary boundaries. It combines theory with interactive methods, reflection exercises, group work, and blended learning tools. The structure follows three main learning blocks: exploring personal and UN values, understanding the Doughnut model and its five key themes, and applying the City Portrait methodology to analyse local realities. Through research, interviews, and collaborative analysis, participants connect global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with concrete local action.

The DO YOUth handbook on Doughnut Economics introduces a new way of thinking about economics for youth. A practical guide to work with SDGs and make change.

Designed for youth workers, trainers, CSO leaders, and young people aged 16+, the handbook offers flexible session plans that can be delivered offline, online, or in blended formats. It is not a rigid curriculum but a practical guide that encourages adaptation to local needs. By using this resource, facilitators can help young people think systemically, act responsibly, and become active contributors to more inclusive, sustainable, and thriving communities.
